Portion Distortion….

We as Americans are the heaviest people in developed countries. Obesity has been called a natural epidemic. One reason for this is because Americans overeat. When is the last time you went out to eat and said, “That’s not enough food for what they are charging for it” or how often do you have leftovers when leaving a restaurant. It’s because we as American have the mindset that more is better and less is a rip off…in turn we are eating way too much. That “good deal’ isn’t necessarily good for you…
Serving sizes of Adults are:
· 3oz. of meat or a deck of cards
· 1 teaspoon of oil or the diameter of a quarter
· 1 cup of raw vegetables or the size of a light bulb
· 1 medium fresh fruit or the size of tennis ball
· 1 bagel or roll the size of a 6oz. tuna can
Next time you go to the movies and get JUMBO popcorn, unbuttered, it is 1650 calories and 93 grams if fat…compared to what should be one serving 3 cups which is 165 calories and 9 grams of fat.
Stay clear of words like combo, supersize, deluxe, biggie, and ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT!!!!!!!!!!
Some tricks to avoid the large portions are asking your waitress to box half of your meal before you eat it, sharing entrees with someone else, or looking at menus before going to restaurant to plan meals before you get there…
Next time you are at the drive thru get a kid’s meal…a cheeseburger (1/4lb. of meat) kids meal minus the drink is 685 calories and 33 grams of fat compared to a Regular cheeseburger (1/2 lb. of meat) that has 1345 calories and 53 grams of fat…
Next week…diet modifications and recommended intakes

I think comparing the portion sizes to familar, everyday items is going to be helpful. It's hard visualize how much 3 oz is, but I do know the size of a deck of cards! Thanks for this useful info and I'm looking forward to next week's posting.
